Wasp Nest Removal Stockton Heath

Stockton Heath grew up where the Bridgewater Canal crosses London Road, then found itself fenced off from the rest of Warrington when the Ship Canal was cut along its northern edge. What survives is a village with a proper centre of its own — Victoria Square and the run of shops and eating places either side of it — ringed by large Victorian houses, interwar semis spreading south into Appleton and Walton, and a great many old trees. Where we find nests in Stockton Heath

The conservation area covers the frontages along London Road and Grappenhall Road, and the way those houses were built explains most of what we deal with here.

• Porch roofs and entrance vestibules. The big village houses were built with covered porches, and a boarded porch ceiling is a dry, undisturbed box sitting directly above the front door. It is the most awkward place in the house to find a nest and one of the most frequent.
• Bay window canopies. Where the small pitched roof over a bay meets the main wall, the flashing lifts with age and leaves a slot two or three millimetres wide. That is all a queen needs in April, and by August there is a colony behind it.
• Soffit vents on the Appleton and Walton semis. The estates south of the village use ventilated soffits and fascia returns, and the gap behind the board at a hip end is a standard nest site right across WA4.
• Back-entry garages and brick stores. Plenty of plots here keep a detached garage or an outbuilding off the rear entry that nobody opens between October and July. Those hold the largest nests we see all season.
• The towpath hedge and canal-side trees. Gardens running down to the Bridgewater have mature limes and hollow-limbed trees right up against the boundary, and hornets in particular use them. If the nest turns out to sit in the towpath hedge rather than on your land, we will say so instead of treating it.

Wasps at the outside tables

Something changes in the village centre in the last week of August. Up to that point the workers are feeding grubs inside the nest and getting a sugary secretion back in return. Once the queen stops laying, that supply ends and a few thousand wasps go looking for sugar on their own account — which means the beer gardens and pavement seating along London Road and around Victoria Square.

A nest in your own building, whether it is behind a fascia above the signage, in a bin store roof or in the void over a flat-roofed kitchen extension, is a job we can do before opening or after close for the same fixed price. Bumblebee nests are £70, though we will usually suggest leaving one where it is to die back naturally in the autumn. Honeybees are not a job for insecticide at all; if a swarm settles on a branch, a local beekeeper may collect it. If we come out and there is nothing treatable on your property, there is no charge.
